Carrigan, Henning to represent Rosemount at state swim meet
The Rosemount Irish boys' swimming diving team is sending two entrants to the Class AA state swim meet—senior diver Brady Carrigan in the one-meter dive and junior Keegan Henning in the 500-yard freestyle—despite Mother Nature's best efforts. They cancelled swimming on Wednesday, Feb. 20, and ended up doing all diving on Thursday. The preliminaries were cancelled and they held just one time final to see who would go to state on Friday, Feb. 22. Head coach Jake Kemna said his team definitely had to overcome some adversity and they responded well.
"It definitely was a little more pressure," he said. "With the guys it's like 'ok, I've got one shot to do this' and some of those guys, they rely on prelims and you know they spent two-and-a-half weeks preparing for prelims mentally, and then to take that away, that's mentally tough. But all-in-all, for the most part we adjusted great."
"We swam great, we did," Kemna said about his team's performance overall. "We had big drops, everyone swam great, they definitely adjusted to the (timed finals), you could tell it was an adjustment but you could see that the guys stepped up and swam well. We had a great meet, everyone was really happy with the way it went."
This is the first state meet for both Carrigan and Henning. Carrigan finished fourth in the one-meter dive with 328.35 points and Henning qualified in the 500 freestyle via the qualifying standard time with a third-place finish and a time of 4 minutes, 43.79 seconds. Kemna said that while he hopes the both of the just enjoy the experience of the state meet, Henning is seed with a good chance of making it to a consolation or championship finals and is just two seconds away from the school record.
