Rosemount junior and Swedish exchange-student Emilia Svaerd represented the Irish well last Tuesday and Wednesday, June 11-12, where she tied-for-16th at the Class AAA state girls' golf tournament at Bunker Hills Golf Club. Svaerd shot an 81 on day one and then improved on day two with a 79 for a two-day score of 160. She was just eight strokes out of the top-10 and the winner—freshman Isabella McCauley of Simley—shot a 9-under-par 135, 10 strokes ahead of the second-place finisher.

Svaerd said she was nervous leading up to teeing off on day one, but was able to calm down after her tee shot. One area she said she improved on from day one to day two was pitching into the greens from 20, 30 yards out.

Svaerd did not make a single double-bogey or higher on day one as she came in with nine bogeys and nine pars. While a wonderful round by itself, she improved by two strokes the next even though her scores were a little more up and down. Day two saw Svaerd make one double-bogey and two bogeys on the front nine with six pars. On the back she made a birdie, five pars, two bogeys and a double-bogey.

"Today I did well the first five holes, then I had a dip down and then it turned around until 17 (where she made the double), but then I par'd 18," Svaerd said after her final round.

Overall, Svaerd said she enjoyed the state tournament experience.

"It was so fun, I wish I could do it again," she said.

Svaerd returns to Sweden in July after being in the United States since August.
