Irish girls' basketball beats Eagan to advance in sections
Playoffs are here and the No. 3-seeded Rosemount Irish girls' basketball team got off on the right foot when they beat the No. 6 Eagan Wildcats 49-33 Wednesday night, Feb. 27, in Rosemount. After a rough month of January, the Irish got back on track and won their last eight games of the regular season heading into sections. They finished the regular season with a 17-9 overall record and went 9-9 in the South Suburban Conference to take sixth. With the win over the Wildcats, Rosemount travels to No. 2 Apple Valley on Saturday, March 2, for the section semifinals. Apple Valley beat Hastings 80-58 on Wednesday night.
Rosemount established 12 point advantage as they led Eagan 23-11 at halftime and then held on to win 49-33. Junior Taylor Janssen led the Irish in scoring with 12 points while fellow junior Larisa O'Neil added nine. Sophomore Ivory Finley scored eight points and sophomore Helen Staley and freshman Alexa Ratzlaff each contributed seven. Freshman Tayah Leenderts scored six points.
Rosemount and Apple Valley split their two meets so far this year. The Eagles prevailed in their first meeting in January 50-39, but the Irish took the second meeting in the last game of the regular season 53-51.
On the top of the Section 3AAAA bracket, No. 1 Eastview beat No. 8 Park of Cottage Grove 73-42 and No. 5 Henry Sibley defeated No. 4 Burnsville 71-65. Should Rosemount win, they would play the winner of Eastview and Henry Sibley in the section championship game on Wednesday, March 6, at the high seed.
