Tennis: Irish keep going strong

Rosemount's girls tennis team continued its strong start to the 2008 season last week.

The Irish picked up a key nonconference victory over Prior Lake on Friday, winning 5-2 over the Lakers.

Rosemount swept the doubles play, and picked up a pair of victories in singles play.

At No. 1 singles, Virginia Norder continued her strong start to the season, winning 6-0, 6-1.

Kayla Ross also picked up a victory in singles play, winning 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3 in a closely contested match.

In doubles play, in the No. 1 match Makayla Newberry and Kasey Noll were victorious, 6-2, 6-2.

At No. 2 doubles, Michelle Boateng and Kayla Brewitz also won, but it took three sets. They came out on top, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 3 doubles, Shelby Gamache and Hailey Johnson, who played together as a team last year on the junior varsity, picked up a victory. The duo showed their experience playing together and used it to help them win 6-2, 6-4.

The victory continued Rosemount's strong start to the season. The Irish had played well in a tournament in Buffalo and beat Lake Conference rival Eastview in previous matches.

Results of Rosemount's other two meets last week were not available as of press time.

The Irish will continue to be busy early this season during the coming weeks. They host a tournament at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Rosemount High School.

On Monday, the Irish will host Eagan in a Lake Conference match at 3:30 p.m.

Next Wednesday, the Irish will travel to Lakeville North for another conference match at 3:30 p.m., and then they will return home next Friday for a 3:30 p.m. match against conference rival Apple Valley.
