A new year, a new name

Summit Dental staff includes hygienist Brooke Mulville, Dr. Kristin Nelson and front desk Christina Sunde. The staff also includes another hygienist, Katie and dental assistant Emily.

Since taking ownership of Robinson Dental Excellence last May, Dr. Kristin Nelson has had the opportunity to meet a lot of new people.

“It’s fun to get to know everybody and we care to know,” said Nelson.

Getting to know people is one of the reasons Nelson got into dentistry. And as she’s settled into owning her own practice, it’s something she will do a lot more of.

Nelson purchased the practice in May of 2013. The name of the practice recently changed to Summit Dental to reflect the change in ownership. Per her agreement with Heather Robinson, the previous owner, she had a year to change the name. Nelson said choosing a new name was a difficult task.

“It took six months to choose a name. All the obvious choices were taken. I wanted the name to convey the kind of practice we want to be and the type of dentistry we want to practice,” said Nelson.

Summit Dental, she said, reflects their commitment to exceptional care and continuous work to go above and beyond to serve their patients.

Summit offers general dentistry services for the whole family including routine, restorative and cosmetic services. Nelson enjoys treating patients from small children to seniors.

Overall, Nelson said their goal is to provide patients with a positive experience. Her staff strives to make each appointment a positive experience for her patients. With kids, that focus is especially important as their early experiences at the dentist can influence their habits later in life.

Nelson lives in the Rosemount area as does her staff. Front desk employee Christina Sunde said she thinks it’s wonderful that the practice is locally owned.

Meet the doctor

Nelson has practiced dentistry for more than nine years. She graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a degree in biology in 1999. She then attended the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, where she earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery.

In choosing a career, Nelson knew she wanted to be in healthcare. Her mom worked in a dental office when Nelson was growing up and her familiarity with the field influenced her decision. After years of working as a dentist, Nelson knows she made the right decision.

“I like the interactions with people and I like to help people improve their health,” said Nelson.

Before purchasing Robinson Dental Excellence, Nelson practiced with several different private group practices.

Nelson comes from a family of entrepreneurs and business ownership has long been a goal of hers. Nelson grew up in Mendota Heights.

Nelson had been looking for a practice for several years when she learned that Robinson was available. Nelson said the location and practice were a good fit for her so she jumped at the opportunity. Nelson lives in the area with her husband and three children.

As a dentist, Nelson said it’s her goal to provide dentistry in a caring and gentle manner. She has surrounded herself with staff who support that goal. Overall, Nelson said they work to provide exceptional care.

Going forward, Nelson hopes to continue to add more services and possibly another dentist.
