A lot rides on the Rosemount Legion baseball team's pitching and defense as it opens the district tournament tonight in Apple Valley. When those two aspects of the game go well, Rosemount can come out on top like it did in Saturday's 2-0 shutout victory over Prior Lake at Memorial Park. When the pitching and defense falter, the team is just as capable of falling behind like it did a few hours later in a 9-2 loss to Shakopee in its regular-season finale Saturday night at Dakota County Technical College.
Two-hundred and eighty-four runners participated in the 27th-annual Run for the Gold Saturday morning outside the Rosemount Community Center. 2012 Rosemount graduate and current St. Olaf College distance runner Calvin Lehn won the title in the feature four-mile race, covering the winding course in 20 minutes, 34 seconds to top the field of 183 runners. He bettered his time from a year ago when he ran 22:05 to place third.
It took a couple of rallies for the Rosemount Pipers to finally overtake the Minnetonka Lakers Sunday night. The Pipers spent six innings chipping their way back into the game after spotting Minnetonka four runs via four straight walks in the top of the second inning. Three runs in the bottom of the sixth gave Rosemount a brief 6-5 lead, but the Lakers answered back with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to pull back in front.
The Rosemount American Legion team pitched well and played good defense, but its offense couldn't get going over the weekend during a 1-4 showing in pool play at the 90-team Gopher Classic. Rosemount allowed just 17 runs in its five games at the Maple Grove site. The team plated only five in four straight losses before closing out the tournament with a 5-3 win over Chippewa Falls (Wis.) on Sunday afternoon.
One bad inning was enough to spoil the Rosemount Pipers' chances against the top-ranked Minnetonka Saints Monday night. The Pipers held the Saints scoreless for most of the game and took a lead in the top of the third when Ken Fry came across on a hit by Greg Sell. But the lead didn't last long. Rosemount gave up six unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning and lost the game, 6-1.
The Rosemount Legion Post 65 baseball team has been short on quality starts during its 2-8-1 start to the season. It finally got one last Tuesday when Luke Dahl held...
Rosemount VFW coach Nick Elioff is hoping the Edina Tournament will serve as a turning point for his team's season. Rosemount won two out of three games at the tournament over the weekend to capture the consolation championship, and has now won four out of six games since starting the season with a record of 1-8. "Winning these four out of six has been a pretty significant turnaround," Elioff said. "We're playing better baseball, having better at bats, and I think we're ready to finish out the season strong."
Fourteen area runners took to the track for the Star of the North Games Saturday at Macalester College in St. Paul. The open track meet is a qualifier for the State Games of America in Hershey, Penn. Rosemount's Tess Durscher, Olivia Passeri, Arianna Passeri and Lexy Berger combined to win the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Arianna Passeri and Berger each added wins in the high jump in their respective age groups and Olivia Passeri was first in the long jump.
A marathon game ended the way very few baseball games do last week for the Rosemount American Legion baseball team: In a tie. The Rosemount Legion team went 11 innings in what should have been a seven-inning game Monday night against Lakeville North, but when the game finally ended the score was still knotted at 5-5. Legion coach Tom Buske said his relief staff were the stars of the game. Alex Duffy, John Birkholz and Dennis Reinhardt gave up just one earned run on three hits over six innings pitched.
