ST. PAUL -- Gov. Mark Dayton wants to preserve state aid to local communities while raising taxes on the richest Minnesotans and increasing education spending in a budget proposal he released this morning. The Democrat's total budget plan for the next two years would be $37 billion, up from just over $30 billion in the budget that ends June 30. At the same time, he makes cuts to help balance a $6.2 billion budget deficit. There were few surprises, since he talked extensively about the budget during a year he campaigned for governor.

Law enforcement officials offered few new details Thursday about an officer-involved shooting late Wednesday in Cottage Grove that left one man dead and another wounded after a traffic stop on the city's west side. A spokesperson revealed little during a midday press conference about what led up to the shooting that Cottage Grove police say occurred shortly before 11 p.m.

Get up ev'rybody and sing!" "And again!" Director Steve Albaugh encourages the chorus to try again, "Come on guys, practice makes permanent." And again! Musical theater, unlike cinema can't be redone for a second take. While on stage, performers must carry out their full talents at all times. "OnStage is basically a glorified talent show," Albaugh said.
The body of Farmington resident Andrew Lindberg was found Wednesday morning with his downed plane in a remote, wooded area about 24 miles east and 6 miles south of Mahnomen. Deputies from Clearwater and Mahnomen counties reached the plane this morning, said Jeanine Brand, Clearwater County's attorney and public information officer. The crash site is near the intersection of state Highway 200 and Height of Land Forest Road, a few miles southeast of Roy Lake. As of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, National Transportation Safety Board officials were en route to investigate the crash.
The Minnesota Supreme Court followed the recommendation of a three-member panel and publicly reprimanded Dakota County Judge Timothy Blakely for his behavior during his 2002-03 divorce proceedings.
