Baseball: Pitching keys Irish victories

Rosemount’s Haydn Lanoue takes a big swing during Friday’s loss to Farmington.

Rosemount got quality innings from all four pitchers that took the mound while winning two out of three games last week.

Alex Duffy and Nate Sprouls split pitching duties in leading the Irish to victory on Saturday. Duffy held Bloomington Kennedy to one unearned run over the first 4 2/3 innings and Sprouls followed with 4 1/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief to close out a 3-1 win at Alimagnet Park.

The Irish lost to Farmington 2-0 on Friday despite a complete-game effort from Luke Dahl. Ben Smith started the string of strong pitching performances by going the distance in a 6-2 decision over Eastview last Wednesday in Apple Valley.

Saturday’s win over Kennedy improved the Irish to 6-7 overall and 5-6 in the South Suburban Conference. Aaron Roszak led the offense with a pair of hits. Duffy and Haydn Lanoue drove in runs and John Birkholz, Cole Northwick and Smith scored.

The Irish managed just four hits against Farmington pitchers Austin Martinsen and JD Hinks in Friday’s 2-0 setback. Leadoff man Jordan Turner had two hits, including a double, and Dahl and Chris Bauer added doubles, but all were stranded in scoring position.

Dahl allowed two unearned runs after an error in the second inning. He allowed eight hits, walked none and struck out five over seven innings.

Smith surrendered four hits and fanned nine over seven innings in last Wednesday’s win over Eastview. He got all the support he would need in the fourth when a couple errors, an RBI single by Duffy and a triple by Lanou plated five runs.

Smith finished 2 for 4 at the plate and scored twice. Northwick added a pair of singles.

The Irish face Apple Valley on the road this afternoon and close out the regular season Monday at Woodbury.
