Softball: Sprang shuts out Eastview

Gabby Sprang hurled her second shutout of the season as the Rosemount softball team extended its winning streak to four games with a 1-0 nail-biter over rival Eastview Monday in Apple Valley.

Sprang struck out five and limited the Lightning to four hits in the complete-game effort. The game remained scoreless until the sixth when Anna Hinderaker led off with a triple and scored on a Nina Kayfes ground out to first base.

The win upped the Irish’s record to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the South Suburban Conference.

The Irish produced some early run support Friday on the road at Chanhassen. Karly Kirchgatter started the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first and Madi Van Sickle followed by launching a three-run home run, which capped off a four-run first and paved the way for an 8-4 victory over the Storm.

Nichole Johnson put the finishing touches on a nine-hit attack with a solo home run over the center field fence in the seventh. Johnson, Sarah Jacobs and Hinderaker all added RBI singles during a three-run sixth that made it 7-1.

Sprang pitched the first four innings and picked up the win, holding Eastview to one run on four hits and fanning six. Hailey Martinez came on in relief and allowed three runs on six hits in three innings.

Beginning Tuesday at home against Eagan, the Irish will close out the regular season with nine games in 11 days.
