Tennis: Sunkam finishes off tennis win over Hastings
The Rosemount boys tennis team rode a sweep of four singles matches to a 4-3 win over Hastings in its first match of the season last Wednesday.
Anshul Bharath set the pace at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Matt Simmering, Sairam Sunkam and Gunnar Anderson also won in straight sets. The match was tied at 3-3 when Sunkam overcame a 4-2 deficit to claim a 7-6 tiebreaker and clinch the team win.
Hastings won all three doubles matches in straight sets, allowing just eight Rosemount points.
The Irish opened South Suburban Conference play last Thursday with a 7-0 sweep at the hands of Lakeville South. Sunkam was the only player to force a third set as he fell 3-6, 7-6 (7-5) on a 9-11 super-tiebreaker.
“It was a tough day in the wind,” RHS coach Dana Beck said. “We were in some close sets and weren’t able to close out games and finish points when we needed to.”
