Girls hockey: South's shorthanded success sinks Irish

Lakeville South scored four shorthanded goals in the final 15 minutes to escape Rosemount Community Center with a 6-2 South Suburban Conference win over the Irish Saturday afternoon.

The Irish trailed 2-1 heading into the third, but tied the score two minutes in and looked to have grabbed some momentum when South was whistled for a penalty. The Cougars had no problem operating down a player, however, scoring two goals in a 32-second span to go up 4-2.

“The girls played a very solid game overall. Their even-strength play was the best it’s been all season. If you take away the special teams portion of the third period we are looking at a different result,” Rosemount coach Tom Conboy said. “We had a great opportunity to build off that momentum, but South stunned us.”

On the fourth goal, Rosemount goaltender Lauren Topor was contacted and knocked out of the game. Rachel Carlson took over for the remainder of the game and allowed the final two goals.

The Irish (1-16) will once again try for their first conference win tonight at home against Eastview.
