Wrestling: Irish crown three at Kenyon

Rosemount entered wrestlers in just 10 of 14 weights, but still came in second out of nine teams Saturday at the Dave Mauseth Invitational in Kenyon.

Host Kenyon-Wanamingo, the state’s 12th-ranked Class 1A school, won the team title with 254 points. The Irish headed up the rest of the field with 167 ½ points and Waseca was third with 139 ½ points.

“We felt good bringing essentially two-thirds of our guys and having all 10 place,” Rosemount coach Brett Larson said. “The guys that we had all wrestled really well.”

The Irish crowned three individual champions: Jake Baker, Adam Hedin and Connor Busho.

Baker breezed through the 113-pound bracket. The seventh-ranked senior improved to 8-1 with two pins and a 6-2 decision in the championship.

“He dominated from the get-go,” Larson said. “There was a second-ranked wrestler that moved up from 106 and he beat the guy who beat that guy. He was real solid.”

Hedin, also ranked seventh in the state at 126 pounds, advanced through the 132-pound bracket with a bye, a technical fall and a 4-0 decision. He’s now 9-0 on the season.

“He’s only a sophomore and he’s probably wrestled more than anyone on our team, so he’s really into it,” Larson said. “He was steady as we’d expect.”

Busho rounded out Rosemount’s winners with a 3-0 day at 160 pounds. The senior entered seeded third, but advanced with a pin and two close decisions, 5-4 and 3-2, to win the title.

“He was second at the tournament last year, so he’d had success and he had a great day,” Larson said. “He had to hang on and gut it out toward the end and had a real quality performance.”

Payton Otterdahl and Reuben Cephas each lost in their respective championships to give the Irish a pair of second-place finishes. Otterdahl is still 8-1 after his first loss of the season and Cephas is 7-2.

Charlie Huynh picked up his first career varsity win at 195 pounds and went on to place third.
