Boys soccer: Irish climb to third in the standings

Rosemount’s Andrew Weiler scored three goals in a a pair of Irish victories last week.

The Rosemount boys soccer program started a turnaround last year when it went 9-8-1, but only two of those wins came during its tough South Suburban Conference schedule.

Thanks to a pair of shutouts last week, the Irish now find themselves tied for third in the league with a record of 3-1-1 with four games to play. They scored four goals in the second half in a 4-0 road win at Lakeville South last Tuesday, and came back home to Irish Stadium Thursday for a 3-0 blanking of Bloomington Kennedy.

Goalkeeper Tanner Rons earned both shutouts, giving him six on the season, and five different players provided goals during the week.

“It is nice to see different players step up their game and take charge. We are playing well and hope to continue that into the last four games of the season,” Rosemount coach Mike Floersch said.

Andrew Weiler got the scoring started against Kennedy with a goal on a pass from Erick Barrita. Barrita then scored a goal of his own, with the assist going to Cameron Johnson. Weiler knocked in his second goal of the game and third of the week to cap the scoring.

“He brought a ton of energy to the field and his shots were on,” Floersch said. “The boys came out playing hard and controlled the tempo of the game. It was fun to watch as they worked like a team. We were able to give a lot of players good playing time.”

The Irish started out slow last Tuesday against South, but finally took the lead early in the second half on an unassisted goal by Joe Fakhoury. Fakhoury then assisted on a diving header by Kohl Sparrman that made it 2-0.

Weiler got in the scoring column on an assist from Colin Benson, and then returned the favor by assisting on Benson’s goal, which made it 4-0 Irish.

The Irish (5-3-3) were at Apple Valley Tuesday and return home for their Homecoming game tonight against Burnsville at 7 p.m. Burgers and cookies will be available for all attendees.
