Rosemount VFW: Post 9443 gets in win column

Nate Sprouls throws a pitch for the Rosemount VFW  baseball team.

Rosemount VFW baseball coach Danny Farris says his team continued to battle while losing its first nine games this summer.

The team’s persistence finally paid off with a victory Saturday when it overcame a six-run deficit to defeat Centennial 10-9 in eight innings at the Benz Tournament in Armstrong. Post 9443 scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth, two of which came on Griffin Lanoue’s single that tied the game at 7-7. After Centennial moved back in front with two runs in the top of the eighth, Josh Flink provided the heroics with a walk-off two-run single to right in the bottom of the frame.

“We kept fighting and ended up pulling it out,” Farris said. “What I’ve been seeing is our guys are always getting back up. They tend to lose focus at the beginning of games, but we fight back and play close games. We haven’t usually come out on top, but we’re starting to come around.”

Inconsistent pitching continued to be a problem for Post 9433 during the rest of the tournament. They lost to Osseo 10-8 in Friday’s first-round game and 10-1 to Armstrong on Saturday.

“We’re struggling with pitching this year. We’re walking too many batters and hitting a couple every game,” Farris said. “We’re giving a lot of free bases and you just can’t do that.”

Post 9433 continued its schedule with three road games this week. It played at Shakopee Tuesday, at Apple Valley Wednesday and takes on Lakeville South tonight at 6 p.m. at South.
