Softball: Irish walk off with 4-3 victory over North
One swing of the bat by Izzy Yahr turned defeat into victory for the Rosemount softball team last Thursday.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, two strikes in the count and the Irish trailing Lakeville North by a run, Yahr smashed a triple off the right field wall to bring in two and give the home team the walk-off 4-3 triumph.
The Irish broke a scoreless tie in the sixth inning when Bri Hollenbeck came through with an RBI single, but North answered by plating three unearned runs off pitcher Gabby Sprang in the top of the seventh. Trailing 3-1, the Irish got their final rally going when Meghan Olson and McKinnon each drew walks and Danielle Sorenson came through with a base hit. Maria Back then lifted a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game and set up Yahr’s heroics.
Sprang finished the game with 10 strikeouts and held the Panthers to just two hits. Sprang tossed another gem Monday on the road at Burnsville, striking out 11 and allowing just four hits, but the Blaze took care of two defensive miscues in scraping out a 2-0 win.
Sprang has all four pitching decisions for the 2-2 Irish. She rang up 16 Lakeville South batters in last Tuesday’s season-opening 8-1 win and fanned 11 more the next day in a 2-1 loss to Farmington. Back supplied all the offense against the Tigers, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the fourth inning.
Everybody got in on the action against South as all nine players in the lineup recorded at least one hit. The Irish plated seven runs in the first two innings and finished with 10 hits in six innings.
Sorenson went 2-for-4 and Back, Hollenbeck and Hailey Sickler each drove in two runs. Yahr singled and scored twice.
The Irish returned to the diamond Wednesday for a South Suburban Conference game against Apple Valley and are back at home Thursday, April 20, to take on Stillwater.
