Girls lacrosse: Irish take out Park, 11-6
The Rosemount girls’ lacrosse team started the season off on the right foot by rolling to an 11-6 road win over Park of Cottage Grove last Thursday.
“It was a strong start to the season on both ends of the field. It was a good effort by everyone,” Rosemount coach Jeff Smith said. “We have to fine tune some things, but it was a very good foundation from which to build the season.”
Returning scoring leader Maggie Moeller picked up where she left off last season, scoring five goals and handing out two assists. She also helped out defensively by causing two turnovers, grabbing three ground balls and winning three draws. Larisa O’Neil contributed a hat trick of her own to the Irish’s offensive effort and Britney Topor scored twice. Delaney Smith added her first career varsity goal into the mix and Katie Richards and Sierra Fandrick each tossed in single goals.
On the defensive end, Ayla Pavelka, Alannah Rapp and Gianna Freking combined to cause eight turnovers and win 11 ground balls. Freking also controlled a team-leading five draws.
Goaltender Emily Huntley faced 26 total shots and finished with 13 saves.
The Irish’s home opener Saturday against East Ridge was postponed. They will be back at Irish Stadium Thursday, April 20, to host Woodbury. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m.
