Football: Irish set the pace in the SSC

Rosemount running back Trent Woodcock breaks a Lakeville South tackle during Friday's 35-7 win at Irish Stadium.

The Rosemount football team continued its run toward an undefeated South Suburban Conference season with another lopsided victory Friday night.

Running back Dimitri Williams scored three more touchdowns, but plenty of players got involved in a 35-7 rout of Lakeville South at a misty Irish Stadium. Seven players got carries and five caught passes as the Irish built a 35-0 lead by the 10:05 mark of the third quarter.

Williams found the end zone for the first time on a 21-yard toss from quarterback Jackson Erdmann. Erdmann needed just five completions to rack up 171 yards through the air.

Shortly after Williams’ first score, cornerback Conner Yepsen intercepted a pass and waltzed into the end zone for the second straight week to make it 13-0. Dalton Petersen also hauled in an interception for the Irish.

A 20-point second quarter was highlighted by Erdmann’s longest completion of the day, a 74-yard catch and run by Tray Ashby-Phan that made it 20-0. Williams added a three-yard touchdown run soon after to make it a four-touchdown game at halftime.

Williams completed his hat trick of touchdowns with a one-yard scamper that capped off the first drive of the third quarter. Gabe Ehlers snagged a two-point conversion pass from Erdmann to make it 35-0.

Lakeville South managed just 207 total yards against the stout Irish defense, including just 90 on the ground in 36 attempts. They turned the ball over three times. The Cougars broke up the shutout with an eight-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter.

Lowell Green led Rosemount with 45 yards rushing on 10 carries. Trent Woodcock ran for 33 yards, Williams 21 and Grant Jackson and Tyrek Cross added 20 yards apiece. Jackson also provided a 70-yard kickoff return.

Tyler Hartigan caught two passes from Erdmann for 59 yards. Ashby-Phan, Williams, Anthony Knott and Ehlers each added a reception.

The Irish (5-1) take a perfect 5-0 league record into tomorrow night’s game against Bloomington Jefferson at Bloomington Stadium. The Jaguars (3-3) won their first two games of the year over Bloomington Kennedy and Apple Valley before losing to Minnetonka, Lakeville North and Eastview by a combined score of 114-7. They ended the three-game skid with a 14-7 win on the road at Eagan last week.
