Girls soccer: Blaze beat Irish 1-0

Unbeaten Burnsville took over the No. 1 spot in the Class 2A state rankings shortly after hanging on for a 1-0 victory over Rosemount last Thursday at Irish Stadium.

The Blaze earned their ninth shutout of the season to improve to 11-0-2 overall. They have allowed just five goals this season.

The Irish kept the game scoreless until midway through the second half when Burnsville controlled the ball deep on the Rosemount end of the field and knocked in the lone goal of the game.

“As good teams do, Burnsville capitalized on an errant clear on our third of the field,” Rosemount coach Kevin Adams said. “We continued to pressure, but just could not find the back of the net.

“We controlled the pace of play most of the game and dictated the tempo. We had numerous chances to get a lead but were just unable to finish.”

The Irish had better luck finding the net in a 2-1 road win last Tuesday at Apple Valley.

Anna Grausnick scored the game’s first goal on a pass from Jenna Eichten. The game remained 1-0 until halftime.

The Irish outshot the Eagles 7-2 in the second half and scored again at the six-minute mark on a tap-in by Khuyen Doan on a deflected ball.

“Doan was in perfect position when the ball deflected to her side of the net,” Adams said. “We are getting contributions and scoring from different players which has made us effective moving the ball.”

The Irish take a 7-4-2 record into their final three games of the regular season. They wrap up South Suburban Conference play tonight at Lakeville North and then host North St. Paul on Saturday afternoon.
