Boys basketball: Goetz, Kessler combine for 35 in loss

The Rosemount basketball team was in desperate need of a third scoring threat last Tuesday night at Benilde-St. Margaret's.

Garrett Goetz and Jack Kessler combined for 35 points, but the rest of the Irish combined to make just 3 of 18 shots in a 47-45 setback in Plymouth. It was the Irish's fourth straight loss since defeating Shakopee in their season opener.

"We played hard, but did not have a second perimeter guy step up and put the ball in the hoop. It was a low possession game so every possession was huge and magnified," Rosemount coach Bryan Schnettler said. "We had some turnovers and missed open looks that hurt us."

Goetz connected on 9 of 16 shots overall and knocked down three three-pointers en route to a game-high 23 points, but the rest of the team made just 1 of 12 shots from beyond the arc. The Irish also made just 11 of 22 free throws and finished with 14 turnovers.

Kessler turned in his first double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. Logan Halvorson and Kyle Kaupa each added six rebounds.

The Irish return from their winter break today with an appearance at the St. Thomas Tournament. They take on Providence Academy in the opening round at 4:45 p.m.
