Boys basketball: Goetz buzzer-beater sinks Shakopee

Ten of the 12 players who stepped on the Irish Gym court for Rosemount in its season opener against Shakopee were getting their first varsity action.

So when it got down to crunch time, the Irish looked to their two experienced players. Cole Northwick and Garrett Goetz each hit big shots down the stretch and Goetz provided the buzzer-beater that lifted the Irish to a 57-55 victory last Tuesday.

Goetz hit 10 of 14 shots from the floor, connected on all five of his free throws and canned a pair of three-pointers en route to a career-high 27 points. Northwick added 15 points and knocked down five of eight shots from beyond the arc. The guard tandem combined for 42 of the team's 57 points and 15 of its 19 field goals.

Logan Halvorson paced the rest of the team with five points and Kyle Kaupa had four points, four rebounds and three steals.

"Our guys played extremely hard the whole game and we were able to pull it out in the end," Rosemount coach Bryan Schnettler said.

The Irish had a tougher time in their second outing of the season. Third-ranked Hopkins came to Irish Gym Friday night and pulled in front 40-18 by halftime in a 79-48 win.

The Irish finished 0 for 21 from beyond the arc, 12 of 28 from the free-throw line and turned the ball over 29 times.

Jeremy Macchitelli led the team with 12 points. Northwick added 10.
