Volleyball: Irish gets wins against Apple Valley and Woodbury

Freshman Erin Slinde goes up for a block during last Thursday's sweep of Apple Valley.

There was no letdown for the Rosemount volleyball team against an Apple Valley squad that entered last Thursday's match on a nine-game losing streak.

The Irish played well from the start and improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the South Suburban Conference with a 25-20, 25-23, 25-14 league win at Irish Gym.

"We knew we had to play smart and battle through each point," Rosemount coach Smokey Vitek said. "We came out strong and played strong through the entire match."

Katie Duff led a balanced offensive effort with 14 kills and three ace serves. Sarah Jacobs had eight kills, Erin Slinde slammed down six and Bri Glaus added five.

Kim Correll led the defense with 12 digs.

Rosemount started the week by winning a tight four-game match over a Woodbury team that brought a 1-5 record to Irish Gym.

The Irish overcame a slow start to win Game 1 and scored some crucial points late in a pivotal Game 3 to hang on 29-27, 22-25, 28-26, 25-21.

"Woodbury played strong defense. We would have a great hit which we thought would be down, but they would dig it up," Vitek said. "We had to remain patient and persistent with our offense."

Slinde had a solid all-around match for the winners, slamming 14 kills, putting up 17 assists and adding nine digs. Duff led the team with 17 kills and Brittany Morrison paced the defense with 26 digs. Jacobs added eight kills.

The Irish face a tough upcoming schedule as they follow up a conference road game at Burnsville Tuesday by playing at Eastview tonight and in the St. Michael-Albertville tournament tomorrow. Eight ranked teams from Class 1A and 2A will be in action at Albertville.
