Girls tennis: Tennis splits in SSC

Girls tennis faced a tough Prior Lake team this week.

The Rosemount girls tennis team lost to conference champion Prior Lake last regular season before exacting some revenge and upsetting the Lakers in the section tournament finals.

The Irish were left hoping for another opportunity for revenge after falling to the undefeated Prior Lake last Tuesday in Rosemount. The Lakers swept doubles play as they handed Rosemount its second league loss and all but locked up another South Suburban title.

Virginia Norder held on to win a tough first set and picked up the team's lone win at No. 1 singles, 7-6, 6-1. The Irish's other three singles players combined to score just three points.

The doubles team of Rachel Olson and Gretchen McDonald won its first set 7-5 before dropping the next two 0-6 and 3-6.

"Prior Lake was tough. We lost a close one at No. 3 doubles and played strong in the first set of No. 1 doubles," Rosemount coach Dana Beck said. "We are hoping to get another chance at them in sections."

The Irish returned home last Thursday and swept doubles play in a 6-1 triumph over Apple Valley.

Olson and McDonald breezed to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Monica McDonald and Abby Kohagen turned in a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles and Kierstin and Kourtney Johnson teamed up for a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Norder, Ally Baker and Rachel Hoffmann all won their singles matches in straight sets. Emily Harrington won her first set 7-6 before falling 3-6, 3-6 at No. 3 singles.

The Irish closed out conference play Tuesday Bloomington Jefferson and open up section tournament play next week.
