Cross country: Boys defend invite title

The seventh-rated (Class 2A) Rosemount boys cross country team lived up to its appearance in the first state rankings of the year by defending its team title at the Irish Invitational Friday morning.

The Irish had a spread of just 40 seconds, third best out of 17 teams in the field, between senior Trevor Capra and No. 5 runner Ryan Brumm as they scored 91 points. Runner-up White Bear Lake was second with 112 points, followed by Mounds View with 124.

Capra ran a second-place time of 10 minutes, 17 seconds on the two-mile course outside Rosemount High School. He was edged for the individual title by Forest Lake's Jacob Jankowski, who finished in 10:13.

Sophomore Sam Ivanecky stuck with Capra for the first mile before settling for a 15th-place 10:35 clocking. Junior Cody Sedbrook emerged to come in 18th in 10:45, 19 seconds faster than his time two weeks earlier at the team's alumni meet.

Senior Tommy Linder served as the team's No. 4 runner with a 27th-place time of 10:57 and Brumm was less than a second back in 29th.

Alex Desbele added a 30th-place time of 10:58 and Michael Sampers was 35th out of 124 runners in 11:02.

The Irish had a strong front three in the girls race as they placed fourth out of 14 teams.

Prior Lake's top two runners came in 4-5 as the Lakers outscored Lakeville North 83-112 for top honors. Northfield was third with 127 points, followed closely by the Irish's 130.

A pair of returning individual state qualifiers led the way. Junior Hannah Grim placed 13th out of 109 runners with a time of 12:35 on the two-mile course and sophomore teammate Liz Evenocheck was 16th in 12:39.

Senior Taylor Rambo made it a close front three with an 18th-place 12:43 clocking.

Senior Taybri Irving led the rest of the Rosemount pack with a 41st-place time of 13:13. Teammate Rachel Schow was a second behind in 42nd and Seventh-grader Sydney Regalado placed 57th in 13:27.

The Irish have another week to train before taking on several ranked area teams at the competitive Applejack Invitational at Aronson Park in Lakeville next Friday.
