Boys track: Irish finish fifth at section

Preston Webb hands the baton to Darrell Hunt during the 4 x 200 relay at the Section 3AA meet. The Irish finished second which qualified the relay team for state.

Last spring the Rosemount boys track team got moved to Section 1AA and responded by winning the team title and qualifying nine individual events and three relays for the state meet.

The Irish were placed back in Section 3AA this season and qualified two events for state while placing fifth with 70 points at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Apple Valley defeated Eastview 117 1/2-89 to win the team trophy and Park and Prior Lake followed with 80 and 74 points, respectively.

Senior Chandler Dye will return to the state meet in the 1,600-meter run after capturing the team's lone title with a time of 4 minutes, 19.18 seconds. The clocking ranks seventh among state qualifiers.

Also qualifying for a spot at this week's meet at Hamline University was the 4x200 relay. The foursome of Preston Webb, Darrell Hunt, Christian Hummelgard and Teagen Overbey combined for a time of 1:30.12, just one-hundredth of a second back of Apple Valley.

The Irish placed high in all four relays. The 4x400 (Charlie Broback, Kyle Johnson, Dye, Overbey) and 4x800 (Tim Sampers, Michael Koziol, Aaron Elizondo, Kwame Owusu) each narrowly missed state berths while placing third and the 4x100 (Hunt, Salih Mohamed, Webb, Overbey) finished fourth.

Johnson and Broback also challenged for state-qualifying times in the open 400, placing 3-4 in times of 50.37 and 51.95, respectively.

Calvin Lehn and Nathan Rock placed 3-4, as well, in the 3,200. Lehn's time of 9:24.94 was two seconds shy of the state standard. Lehn and Rock added a 5-8 showing in the 1,600.

Matt Walls and Payton Otterdahl added a scoring double in the shot put, placing fifth and seventh.

The Irish's next-highest individual finish came from Owusu, who was seventh in the 800 finals in a time of 2:01.10.

Ninth-place finishes were turned in by Keijuan Brown in the high jump, Phong DoVu in the pole vault, Conor Manning in the 300 hurdles and Stephen Sawyer in the 110 hurdles. Sawyer added an 11th-place showing in the high jump and DoVu was 11th in the triple jump.
