Boys golf: Looking for improvement before sectionals

Strong play from Luke Gillette helped the Irish improve their outlook Tuesday. The Irish placed 6th out of ten teams in a South Suburban Conference meet Tuesday at Bracketts Crossing. The team's combined score was 321.

While their ranking wasn't as high as coach Kyle Fredrickson had hoped the team came out of the meet feeling better after a discouraging weekend.

"I think this is what we are capable of," said Fredrickson of the meet.

Gillette led the pack shooting a season best 75, Josh Doyle followed with a 77, Jake Sweetman scored an 83 and Cody Schultz shot an 86. Travis Parker carded a 90 and Ryan Sword a 93.

Over the weekend, the Irish played two meets on their home course, Emerald Greens, but didn't do particularly well in either competition.

"It was disappointing. We were hoping to shoot better on our home course," Fredrickson said.

On Friday the Irish hosted a South Suburban Conference meet. The team had a combined team score of 325 to come in eighth out of 10 teams.

Freshman Jake Sweetman led the Irish with a 76, Josh Doyle followed with a 79, Luke Gillette carded an 82 and Travis Parker scored an 88. Cody Schultz shot a 90 and Ryan Sword 91.

Things didn't get any better on Saturday for the Dakota County Invitational. The combined team score was a 332, which placed them sixth out of seven teams.

Doyle led the Irish Saturday with an 81. Sweetman followed with an 82, then Sword with an 83 and David Booke shot an 86. Brendan McElroy shot a 90 and Cody Schultz a 94.

While the weekend didn't play out like the team had hoped, Fredrickson said they hope to turn things around in the coming weeks as they head toward sectionals. He said the team will continue to work on its short game.

Fredrickson said he is hopeful the Irish can make state as a team. To do that they will have to put their game together and shoot well at sectionals later this month.

The last conference meet will be played May 21 at Valleywood Golf Course in Apple Valley.
