Boys tennis: A busy first week

Rosemount No.3 singles player Sean Hatlen returns a serve during last Thursday's 6-1 win over Burnsville.

Rosemount boys tennis coach Dana Beck has high expectations for her team this season, and its performance during a busy first week did nothing to lower them.

The Irish opened the season with a 7-0 sweep of South Suburban Conference rival Bloomington Kennedy last Tuesday, and then improved to 2-0 with a 6-1 victory over Burnsville Thursday. The team capped off the week with a third-place finish at the eight-team Royal-Raptor Invitational in Woodbury.

"The first week of play showed great promise for the upcoming season," Beck said. "We have a very good squad and expectations will be high, to be one of the top teams in the conference this season."

Helping the cause for the Irish are eight returning letterwinners -- Will Holcomb, Jordan Randall, Stu Hatlen, Sean Hatlen, Connor McGahn, Grayson Freking, Austin Peelor and Taji Onesirosan -- and two key newcomers, exchange student Andreas Dinkelmeyer and seventh-grader Anshul Bharath. Seniors Morgan Davis and Jon Duff and sophomore Matt Simmering have also made the jump to varsity.

"We have a very solid and deep team this year," Beck said.

Dinkelmeyer, a sophomore, is unbeaten so far this season at No. 1 singles. He opened with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Kennedy, and then won 6-2, 6-4 against Burnsville before collecting a first-place medal Saturday in Woodbury. Also placing at the Royal-Raptor Invite were Holcomb, who placed third at No. 2 singles and the team of Stu Hatlen and McGahn, which placed third at No. 1 doubles.

Those finishes gave the Irish a team score of 4.29. Bloomington Jefferson won the meet with 2.0 points, followed by East Ridge with 3.71.

The Irish traveled to Eagan Tuesday and are back home tonight against Eastview.
