Boys hockey: Eagan knocks out Irish, 12-0

The Rosemount Boys Hockey teams lost to Eagan to finish their season last Thursday.

The Rosemount boys hockey team spent the final week of the season on an emotional roller coaster.

After ending a month-long losing streak with a 5-1 victory over Farmington in last Saturday's regular season finale, the Irish made it two in a row with their biggest victory of the season, a 4-3 win on the road at Woodbury in the opening round of the Section 3AA tournament. The Irish didn't have long to savor the victory, however, as third-ranked Eagan put an end to their season with a 12-0 rout last Thursday.

The Irish (6-21) finished with six wins for the second year in a row. The program has won 18 total games in four seasons since winning 20 in 2007-08.

Eagan scored five goals in each of the first two periods in last Thursday's section game at Eagan Civic Arena. The Wildcats, who finished with a 55-11 advantage in shots on goal, take on Hastings tonight at the State Fair Coliseum with a trip to the state tournament on the line.

It took the Irish over 67 minutes and two overtimes to outlast eighth-seeded Woodbury in last Tuesday's section opener at Bielenberg Arena.

Ted Schultz's second goal, a power-play score, finally broke a 3-3 tie at the 6:45 mark of the second overtime. In regulation, the Irish also got goals from Austin Anderson (assists to Ryan Gould and Trevor Kolden) and Evan Weiand (assist to Anthony Winters). Tom Fraune played the whole game in goal and stopped 38 shots.
