Swimming: Stern, Peterson lead Rosemount to fifth at Maroon and Gold

First-place individual showings by Jim Peterson and Jacob Stern, along with three high relay finishes, led Rosemount to fifth place out of 12 teams in the Gold Division at the Maroon and Gold Invite Saturday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center.

The Irish scored 393.5 points, which bested teams from Edina, East Ridge, Prior Lake, Rochester Century, Cretin-Derham Hall, Chaska and Hopkins. Eden Prairie beat runner-up Des Moines Dowling (Iowa) 614-515 for the team title and Minnetonka (482) and Maple Grove (433) rounded out the top four.

Peterson came out on top against a field of 35 divers with a score of 197.15. He was joined by teammates Gareth Estabrook (9th, 160.35) and Daniel Monaghan (10th, 154.30) in the top 10.

Stern bested a field of 40 swimmers in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.10 seconds.

The Irish finished in the top five in all three relays, with the best showing going to the 200 medley relay in the first event of the meet. The foursome of Braden McCormack, Stern, Luke Dowell and Conor Manning combined on a time of 1:38.07 that was good enough for second place, about 2 1/2 seconds off the pace of first-place Eden Prairie.

Dowell, Stern and Manning joined Sheldon Hatlen for a third-place performance in the 200 freestyle relay and Hatlen, Manning and Dowell teamed up with Andrew Urness for a fifth-place effort in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Irish earned a pair of fourth-place individual finishes, one from McCormack in the 100 backstroke and one from Hatlen in the 100 freestyle.

Manning added a seventh-place effort in the 50 freestyle and Dowell (100 butterfly), Urness (500 freestyle)and Hatlen (200 freestyle) each tacked on ninth-place performances.
