Swimming: Irish swim at state

Depth helped Rosemount capture the Section 3AA championship last week when the Irish advanced 34 of their 37 events through to the meet's second day.

The team pulled off a similar feat at the Class 2A State Swimming and Diving Championships, advancing six of seven events to the championship or consolation finals en route to a 22nd-place total of 29 points.

"The girls swam hard," Rosemount coach Tami Carlson said. "They dropped some time from section finals and did a great job at state."

Eighth-grader Megan Wenman made it through to the championship finals of the 100 freestyle in her first career state meet. She entered the event seeded 17th, snuck into the finals with an eighth-place prelim time of 53.41 seconds and earned All-State honors with a seventh-place 53.51 clocking in the finals.

Wenman also placed 12th in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:55.34 and joined senior Elyse Griffith, freshman Olivia Johnston and senior Beth Wenman for a 15th-place time of 3:39.26 in the 400 freestyle relay.

Beth Wenman closed out her prep career with two other consolation final appearances. She placed 16th in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.84 and 12th in the 100 backstroke in 59.29.

Wenman, Johnston, freshman Katrina Orthmann and senior Teija Normandeau teamed up to place 20th in the 200 medley relay prelims.

Junior Claire Tolan added a 15th-place time of 5:16.25 in the 500 freestyle.
