Cross country: Irish runners 7th at Nike Nationals in Sioux Falls

The Rosemount boys cross country team wrapped up the fall season with its second straight top-10 team finish Saturday at the Nike Cross Nationals Heartland Regional meet.

The Irish, fifth last year, placed seventh out of 26 teams with 221 points in action at Yankton Trails Park in Sioux Falls. They defeated state championship teams from Nebraska, Kansas and South Dakota.

Minnesota Class 2A champion Stillwater won the meet with 96 points. They will be joined at Nike Cross Nationals by Hartland Hustle, which was second with 104 points. Bismarck (139), Burnsville (166), Flying D XC (168) and Edina (202) rounded out the top six teams.

"The guys had a good finish to the season. The Heartland meet is highly competitive and to finish in the top 10 is a credit to their training and hard work over the summer and fall,"?Rosemount coach Chris Harder said. " This was a special group of seniors and they left their mark on their program. They are a good model for future teams to emulate."

Senior Nathan Rock paced the Irish as he placed 24th out of 244 runners with a time of 16 minutes, 21 seconds on the 5,000-meter course. Rock earned All-State honors with a 21st-place showing at last weekend's state meet.

Trevor Capra once again served as Rosemount's No. 2 runner. He came in 36th in a time of 16:32.

Three seniors rounded out the team's top five. Chandler Dye was 52nd in 16:47, Tyler Blumke came in 54th in 16:48 and Nick Couillard was right behind in a 55th-place time of 16:50.

Senior Calvin Lehn (61st, 16:55) and freshman Sam Ivanecky (94th, 17:21) also finished in the top half of the field.
