Volleyball: Rosemount seeded ninth after 13 - 14 season

Rosemount managed to build some momentum for the Section 3AAA tournament while splitting its final two regular season matches last week.

The Irish beat Woodbury last Tuesday, and then closed out a 13-14 regular season with a 3-0 loss at fifth-ranked (Class 3A) Lakeville North on the road Wednesday night. The team ended up with four wins in its final six matches, giving head coach Smokey Vitek confidence heading into Wednesday night's Section 3AAA first-round game at eighth-seeded Burnsville.

"We played well against Woodbury and pretty well against Lakeville North," she said. "Burnsville is a good matchup for us, and if we can bring intensity and consistency we can pull off an upset win. During the last two matches we have been doing a much better job connecting on offense, especially with our middle hitters."

The Irish, who earned the ninth seed in the section, lost at home to the Blaze 3-0 on Oct. 11. The Blaze have since lost two straight and enter the tournament with a record of 10-13. Wednesday's winner advances to take on top-seeded Lakeville South in the section quarterfinals Friday night in Lakeville.

Lakeville North's big front row made it tough for the Irish to finish off points in last Wednesday's regular season finale.

The Panthers capped off a 22-5 regular season with a 25-8, 25-19, 25-15 sweep. You can watch the match online at

"We played pretty well, better than the score reflects," Vitek said. "We battled for many of the points, but North would win most of them. They are a very solid team. They passed really well and played good, disciplined defense, making it tough for us to get points."

Jaclyn D'Amico led the team with five kills. Brittany McLean added four kills and a season-high five blocks.

Lauren Officer stepped in at libero and led the team with 17 digs. Setter Mikaela Sullivan added 15 asssists and eight digs.

The Irish had better luck putting the ball on the floor against Woodbury, racking up 35 kills in a 25-16, 25-23, 25-18 victory last Tuesday.

D'Amico set the pace with 11 kills, McLean slammed seven and Erin Slinde added six. Sullivan assisted on 29 of the kills and added 12 digs.
