Girls swimming: Rosemount takes home True Team title

Megan Garin swims Saturday during the Section 3AA True Team meet. This is the first True Team championship for the Irish.

The True Team format is designed to reward the teams with the most depth.

That team was Rosemount at Saturday's Section 3AA True Team meet at Rosemount Middle School. The sixth-ranked (Class 2A) Irish won three of the meet's 12 events, but had 32 other top-10 finishes as they racked up 1,034 points and claimed their first True Team championship.

Woodbury placed second with 985 ½ points, followed by East Ridge (859), Cretin-Derham Hall (685 ½), Henry Sibley (493 ½) and Park (321 ½).

The Irish started the meet in fine fashion, winning each of the first two events. The foursome of Beth Wenman, Olivia Johnston, Katrina Orthmann and Teija Normandeau opened with a winning time of 1 minute, 57.50 seconds in the 200 medley relay, netting the team 48 points. Rosemount also had the highest-finishing second relay in the event as Elyse Griffith, Ashley Heimkes, Grace Herron and Kennedy Erdmann teamed up for a seventh-place effort, worth 38 points.

The team followed with its highest-scoring individual event of the meet. Megan Wenman won the 200 freestyle and was one of four Irish swimmers in the top 10, ahead of teammates Claire Tolan (second), Megan Jelinski (seventh) and Grace Tolan (ninth).

The Irish placed at least two competitors in the top seven in each of the next four events. In the 200 individual medley, Johnston, Beth Wenman and Orthmann finished second, fourth and seventh, respectively, earning a combined 62 points. Madeline Ryan and Normandeau followed with a 2-3 showing in the 50 freestyle and Orthmann and Herron did the same in the 100 butterfly. Orthmann also contributed a fourth-place swim in the 100 breaststroke.

Sawyer Murray and Kristina Terhaar scored fourth- and seventh-place finishes in the 1-meter dive.

The Irish lost some ground in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke, but made up for it by putting three swimmers in the top seven in the 100 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Griffith won the 100 backstroke in 1:03.16, Beth Wenman claimed runner-up honors and Jessica Troen was seventh.

Megan Wenman placed second in the 100 freestyle, Griffith was right behind in third and Madeline Ryan placed sixth. The 500 freestyle saw four Irish break into the top 10 - Claire Tolan (second), Troen (fifth), Jelinski (seventh) and Grace Tolan (10th).

The Irish cemented their place at the top of the standings by placing highly in the final two relays. In the 200 freestyle relay, Rosemount teams placed second, seventh and eighth. In the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, the Irish came in second, third and seventh.
