Volleyball: Rough week for Irish

Rosemount's Jaclyn D'Amico spikes the ball during a home match last week at Irish Gym.

Injuries to attacker Natalie Busher and libero Nicole Valentini made it a tough week for the Rosemount volleyball team.

Busher suffered a high ankle sprain in practice last Monday and Valentini sustained a concussion in a recent car accident, leaving the Irish without much depth as they lost five out of seven matches and saw their record slip to 9-11.

Last week started with a pair of competitive South Suburban Conference losses, a 3-1 setback to Eastview Tuesday at Irish Gym and a 3-0 sweep at the hands of fourth-ranked (Class 3A) Eagan on Thursday. The Irish regrouped for the 32-team St. Michael-Albertville tournament over the weekend and finished 14th, winning two out of five matches.

"Due to injuries and homecoming conflicts we brought a mixed team of varsity and JV players," Rosemount coach Smokey Vitek said. "At times we played very well and other times we struggled with our consistency and focus. Not a bad finish, but we should have finished stronger. We were competitive in every match."

Rosemount started the tournament with a 25-18, 21-25, 15-11 victory over Champlin Park. Eighth-grader Erin Slinde led the offense with 10 and nine kills, respectively, and setter Mikaela Sullivan supplied 26 assists.

Jaclyn D'Amico led the team with 12 assists, Jillian Blanc had 10 and Laurel Officer added nine.

The Irish then lost back-to-back matches to Totino-Grace and 10th-ranked (Class 1A) Nevis. They bounced back with a three-set win over ninth-ranked (Class 1A) Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

Slinde once again led the team with eight kills. Megan Jacobs and Katie Duff each slammed seven and Jaclyn D'Amico added six. Sullivan floated up 27 set assists.

Officer led the way in the back row with 21 digs and D'Amico added 10.

The Irish closed out the tournament with a 2-1 loss to host St. Michael-Albertville.

Duff led the team with 10 kills and matched Slinde with a team-high nine digs.
