Girls tennis: Rosemount advances to semifinals

Rosemount swept doubles play in both of its matches while advancing through the first two rounds of the Section 3AA team tournament last week.

Irish head coach Dana Beck figured it would take another solid doubles effort if the third-seeded Irish were to advance past second-seeded Eagan in Tuesday's section semifinals at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville. The Wildcats defeated Rosemount 6-1 in their early-season South Suburban Conference match.

"I believe we can give them a good fight in the semis.... That (6-1 loss) was early on in the season and we have improved tremendously and have a different lineup," Beck said. "I am confident if we play well and the doubles play aggressively, we can bring home a victory."

The winner of Tuesday's match will likely face top-seeded Prior Lake in the section finals this afternoon back at Lifetime Fitness in Lakeville.

Rosemount opened section play last Tuesday with a 7-0 sweep of Park in Rosemount. The Wolfpack managed to win just two games in singles play as Virginia Norder and Mariah McGivern each won, 6-0, 6-0. Ally Baker claimed her No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-0 and Kirsten Hoffman breezed at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1.

In doubles play, Layna Mestad and Abby Kohagen combined on a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Megan and Emily Harrington teamed up for a 6-4, 7-5 win and Team Rachel (Hoffman and Olsen) held on 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.

The Irish advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1 triumph over sixth-seeded Apple Valley in Thursday's quarterfinals.

The lone blemish came at No. 3 singles were McGivern fell, 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 10-12.

Norder won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and Baker and Hoffman also scored easy victories.

The Irish came out on top in three competitive doubles matches. Mestad and Kohagen held on 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 1 doubles, the Harringtons won 6-3, 6-4, and Team Rachel won 6-4, 6-2.
