VFW 2-2 at River Falls

After starting the season 0-4, the Rosemount VFW baseball team got in the win column with victories over River Falls and Eau Claire last weekend at the River Falls Tournament.

Pitcher Alex Hassebroek set the tone in the tournament opener Friday night, shutting out the host team for seven innings in a 5-0 triumph. Hassebroek struck out 11 while allowing just two hits and three walks.

"He was able to hit spots on both sides of the plate to keep them off balance, then mix in his curveball, which really set up his high fastball," VFW coach Scott Eul said. "His curveball was very good that day."

Haasebroek got all the run support he would need when Tommy Linder doubled and scored on a passed ball in the top of the third. The rest of Rosemount's runs came in the fourth courtesy of three walks and an error.

Rosemount lost its second tournament game 15-3 Saturday morning to Altoona, but bounced back with a walk-off 7-6 win over Eau Claire later in the day.

Eau Claire led 5-0 after the top of the first before Rosemount chipped away with one run in the first, two in the second and three in the third. The score stayed tied at 6-6 until pinch runner Carl Waite scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh.

Linder had a pair of RBI singles for Rosemount and Sam Bauer and Andy Hansen each had RBI hits.

In the tournament finale, Rosemount lost to Chippewa Falls, 11-3. A 10-2 loss at Eagan Monday left the team 2-6.
