An Irish athlete throws shot put during the section meet. The Minnesota Track and Field State Championship starts Friday.

The Rosemount boys track team won the Section 1AA title and the boys and girls track teams will send competitors to state in 11 events following competition Saturday.

The boys scored 178 points in last weekend's section meet, held at Lakeville South High School. Owatonna was second with 83 points.

The girls team was seventh with 50.5 points, just half a point behind sixth-place Northfield.

Both teams will be well represented at state, though.

Rosemount's boys got first-place finishes from Goaner Deng in the 400, Chandler Dye in the 800 and Andrew Hausmann in the triple jump as well as first-place efforts in the 4x200, 4x400 and 4x800 relays.

The 4x200 relay team is Myles Phillips, Clay Notch, Deng and Hausmann. The 4x400 is Christopher Mergens, Deng, Chandler Dye and Hausmann; and the 4x800 is Mergens, John Evenocheck, Dye and Sam Temple.

Hausmann took second behind Deng in the 400 and Phong Dovu took second in the long jump. Both qualified for state.

Joe Bjorklund qualified for state with a second-place finish in the shot put, and teammate Brandt Berghuis joined him with a fourth-place showing. Berghuis also qualified for state with a fourth-place finish in the discus.

The Irish girls got a first-place finish from Shade Pratt in the 400 and from the 4x400 relay team of Thana Hussein, Rachel Schow, Hannah Grim and Pratt.

Preliminary rounds for the state meet will take place Friday at Hamline University with finals Saturday.
