Tennis: Baker, Holcomb advance as doubles team

With the team season ending prematurely, the Rosemount boys tennis team still had a chance to make its mark on the Class 2A, Section 3 tournament.

The Irish, seeded No. 9, lost in the first round to No. 8 seed Burnsville in the team section tournament, but six individuals got to take part in last week's individual tournament.

And a pair of Rosemount players kept their season going.

Matt Baker and Will Holcomb, who each played singles this season, teamed up for the section doubles tournament. The pair advanced to this week's quarterfinals.

"I think Baker and Holcomb have a great chance of continuing to the semifinals and finals if they play well against Eagan," Irish coach Dana Beck said.

Baker and Holcomb comprised the top two spots, respectively, in Rosemount's singles lineup this season. But the duo proved to be capable doubles players last week.

They were seeded No. 6 in the doubles tournament and opened with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Alex Rachner and Lucas Lindstrom from Park. Baker and Holcomb then won 7-5, 6-2 against Burnsville's Zach Biggar and Nick Lesser.

Baker and Holcomb faced Brendan Hollidge and Zach Ekstein, the No. 3 seed from Eagan, earlier this week. Results were not available at press time. Go to to see if Baker and Holcomb kept their season going.

Sean and Stuart Hatlen also played in the doubles tournament for Rosemount. They lost 6-2, 6-3 to the No. 5 seed, Apple Valley's Tanner Raymond and Sam Hoyt.

Two seniors finished their Irish careers last week while playing in the section singles tournament.

Rosemount's Dominic Olhoff lost 6-4, 7-5 to Zekeria Nigatu from East Ridge and Blake Sowokinos lost 6-0, 6-0 to Vishaal Gupta of East Ridge.
