Boys cross country: Irish win SSC's first title

When the Rosemount boys cross country team started this season, it knew there was a chance to win a conference championship.

It's a goal for the Irish every season. Rosemount had won conference titles before in the Lake Conference. With the beginning of the South Suburban Conference this season, the Irish got to take home the new conference's first-ever title.

Rosemount won the South Suburban Championships last week at Eagan. The Irish, ranked No. 4, scored 48 points to beat No. 7 Burnsville (67 points) and No. 12 Eastview (85) for the championship.

It's Rosemount's first conference title since winning the Lake championship in 2007.

"We had a good meet up and down our roster," Irish coach Chris Harder said. "The guys were ready to compete and had some fine performances.

"Our guys started the race under control, then moved up well through the pack. I like the way we competed the second half of the race through the hills and woods."

Shane McCallum led the Irish, placing third overall in 16 minutes, 20.9 seconds. Nathan Rock was sixth in 16:41.5.

Chandler Dye finished 10th in 16:50.9. Calvin Lehn crossed the line in 17:00 to place 13th, while Tyler Henkemeyer was 16th in 17:04.8.

Each finished as an all-conference runner by placing in the top 20.

"To place five guys in the top 16 of a meet of this quality is a testament to their hard work," Harder said.

Trevor Capra (17:30.5, 28th place), John Evenocheck (17:33, 30th) also finished for Rosemount.

The Irish also won the JV team competition with 21 total points.
