McDonald named girls basketball coach

Rosemount High School's girls basketball team will have a new leader next season.

Sam McDonald has been hired as the new varsity coach. He will replace Chris Harder, who resigned following the 2007-08 season.

McDonald is a former assistant coach at Marycrest International University in Davenport, Iowa. He also was head high school coach at Bennett High School in Iowa for three seasons. After moving to School District 196 in 1999 to teach English at Black Hawk Middle School, he also coached a variety of middle school sports.

Most recently he was the varsity assistant coach for the Apple Valley's girls basketball program during 2005-06, where the team compiled an 18-6 record. He then joined the Irish boys basketball staff last year as the varsity assistant coach.

McDonald lives in Rosemount with his wife, Missy and two children, Mason and Sydney. He is looking forward to taking over the Irish program and continuing to build on the strength and success that was built by outgoing coach Chris Harder, according to Rosemount High School athletic director Mike Manning.
