Editorial: Firefighters do a lot for the community

Elsewhere in this edition of the Independent Town Pages you will find stories about the services provided by our local fire departments.

The Farmington Fire Department was presented recently with Life Safety Achievement Award for 2012. The award is a recognition of both the department’s safety record and its efforts to spread the message of fire prevention in the community.

The Rosemount Fire Department was in action earlier extinguishing a fire that broke out at a downtown business. The business will be closed for a few months for repairs, but it could have been worse.

Both stories are reminders of the good work done on a regular by groups of volunteers. Firefighters give up free time, make themselves available at all hours of the day and at times put their safety on the line for the sake of others.

They have done all of those things a lot over the course of this year. It was a remarkably busy summer for lightning-related fires in Rosemount, and Farmington had its share of fires as well, including one a little more than two weeks ago that destroyed one house and could very easily have destroyed another.

It is a lot to ask of individuals who, while they get paid some now, are mostly working for the promise of a pension down the line. And because they like the work they do.

Both departments are on the lookout for new members. If you are looking for a way to give back to your communities, it might be worth a try.
