Editorial: YMCA survey is one step of many

There was a survey recently that suggests Rosemount residents are interested in seeing a new YMCA in the city. That is good news. It is at the very least a sign that the city, Dakota County Technical College and the Y have not been wasting their time over the past year or so as they have discussed the possibility.

It's a sign there is a future in this effort.

It is not, however, a guarantee that anything will happen quickly. Or at all, for that matter.

These things take time. Building a facility like a YMCA is expensive, and it will take more than a survey to convince everyone involved to take the next step, not to mention the many steps after that that lead to the laying of the foundation.

Still, there is reason to be optimistic. This seems like a good partnership. The city has long had an interest in bringing the YMCA to Rosemount, and Dakota County Technical College has made a major effort over the years to expand options for its students on campus. It has added varsity sports and a number of student-life organizations. The school has land, and it has an interest in expanding student options further. The YMCA seems like a good way to do that.

The survey released last week is one step in the process, but it is encouraging at least to know there is reason to continue these discussions. It gives us reason to think something might come of all of this.

Even if it doesn't come immediately.
