Student voices: Know your limits

I did not used to have an issue with waking up for school. However, as the school year has progressed, my inability to be up in time for school is dwindling rapidly. I think a lot of people share this experience. Instead of going to bed earlier, which seems to be a logical an-swer to this problem, I end up staying up later be-cause I am too ex-hausted to focus on homework.

I actually just described the cycle 99 percent of students go through on a daily basis. It's frustrating to get home from school after seven hours to be loaded with five or six more hours of homework, but that's just how it is. However, my method of coping with this has changed recently. Instead of going through the motions and hoping to catch up on sleep over the weekend, I directly solve the issue by drinking caffeine. Not just once a day, but usually at least twice. I no longer can get through a day of school without coffee in the morning, and I can't get through finishing my homework without drinking tea in the afternoon.

A lot of people drink caffeine everyday so perhaps this doesn't seem like a big deal. But to me, it is. It indicates that the extent of the problem is so severe that students, like myself, are struggling to keep themselves awake and afloat in order to get through school. It is really easy to complain about school and not offer a solution, but that's not what I aim to do. I think that a plausible solution to this issue would be for students to get more sleep. It's difficult, but I think it has come to the point where it could begin to be hurtful to health for students to just drag through school on little to no sleep and thus absorb no information and learn nothing.

So, how can this be done? I've always thought that school should start later, but the opportunity to delay the start time of high school seems unrealistic. I don't foresee the amount of homework being assigned decreasing anytime soon either. It's sometimes a difficult realization for the over-achieving student who does everything and anything they can fit into their schedule, but I think we, as a student body, need to recognize our limits and recognize the importance of getting enough sleep, even if the school year is coming to a close in the next few weeks.
