Letter: Understand the meaning of Buddy Poppies

To the editor,

On May 16, 17 and 18, you are going to see many people at various retail locations offering you a VFW Buddy Poppy. The purpose behind the poppy is unknown for many and I would like to clear that up for some of you.

For more than 75 years, the VFW Buddy Poppy program has raised millions of dollars in support of the veterans' welfare and the well being of their dependents. It's your donations that accomplish this feat. Donations provide compensation to the veterans who assemble the poppies, provide financial assistance in maintaining local veterans' rehabilitation and service programs and partially support the VFW National Home for orphans of our nation's veterans.

The monies you provide, the amount never being demanded, remains in the metro area and helps families of our local veterans and also provides support to Hastings and Minneapolis Veteran's Hospitals. Donations are also used to give money to family members to purchase airline tickets to fly home with the body of their fallen hero or to help purchase various items for homecoming ceremonies and local readjustment programs. So when you see that individual with the white can and the handful of poppies, please consider giving what you can. Even if you can't give anything, take a poppy and wear it to show your support for the men and women who have served our country and made the sacrifice.
