Program aims to strengthen marriages

Sometimes while hustling through life, it's hard to take time to connect to a spouse. But pastor Bill Goodwin believes for a marriage to work it's important to work on wedded bliss as a couple.

That's why Lighthouse Christian Church has decided to offer the Marriage Course. The six week course offers couples the chance to connect and strengthen their marriage in a non-threatening atmosphere.

"(Lighthouse) has always been passionate about strengthening relationships. I think there are a lot of couples out there who could benefit from this," said Goodwin.

The course is taught in a non-threatening way. Couples sit at a table, just the two of them and watch a series of DVDs called the Marriage Course. In all there are seven sessions.

After watching the sessions, couples use a workbook to discuss various topics. Topics include understanding each other's needs, communicating more effectively, growing closer through conflict, healing old hearts, recognizing how upbringing affects a relationship, improving family relationships, developing greater sexual intimacy and discovering each other's love languages.

Goodwin said the couples don't share anything with the group and they can concentrate on what matters to them. The aim is to help couples grow closer and build a healthy relationship.

"It's a time to just talk with each other about the things that matter," said Goodwin.

The class is open to any married couple who wants to take part but Goodwin said it focuses on young couples, especially those with young families.

The Marriage Course was developed by Nicky and Sila Lee. The couple has been married for more than 30 years and raised four children. Lighthouse has offered the Marriage Course before and Goodwin said it went over well.

The course will start Oct. 8 at Lighthouse Christian Church. The first day will include three video sessions and will go from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Subsequent sessions will be held Oct. 16, 23, 30 and Nov. 6 from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Cost for the Marriage Course is $45. That includes the course, materials, lunch on Oct. 8, and child care.
