Animal blessing event draws big crowd

In celebration of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Joseph Church held an animal blessing Oct. 1. St. Francis is the patron saint of animals. His feast day was celebrated Oct. 4

While the lizards and the fish didn't mind the Holy Water, some of the cats in attendance looked a little perplexed when they got sprinkled during the St. Joseph Church Blessing of the Animals Oct. 1.

The weather was perfect for the outdoor gathering and everyone there seemed to have a good time.

"We were so excited and what a beautiful day," said Bridget Samson, parish life coordinator.

The event drew all sorts of animals and their owners. Included in the mix were fish, cats, plenty of dogs, cows, horses, crickets and a rooster named Thor.

A number of groups came out. Amazing Animal Advocates had animals available for adoption there. And Fluegel's Farm Garden and Pet handed out pet food samples. Hope Rides, a non-profit organization that helps kids, brought several horses for people to meet.

Each animal received a blessing and the owner was given a cross. The celebration was held in honor of the feast for St. Francis of Assisi. The feast day is Oct. 4.

The event drew not only members of St. Joseph's but residents of the community at large. Samson said that was part of the goal of the event and they were really pleased with the outcome. The event coincided with the St. Joseph School marathon earlier that morning.

Samson said the church plans host the event again and hopes to grow on this year's success.

"There was good support from the community and we hope to continue to partner with organizations in the future," said Samson.
