Arts council wins arts achievement award

The Rosemount Area Arts Council received the Metropolitan Regional Arts Achievement award. John Loch, Ann Loch, Jeanne Schwartz, Jim Kotz and Keith Reed are on the organization's board.

The Rosemount Area Arts Council recently received the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council Arts Achievement Award. It's a pretty big deal for the volunteers who over the last six years have put their blood, sweat and tears into establishing the organization.

"We are proud of the body of work we've accomplished," said Jeanne Schwartz, RAAC chair.

RAAC applied for the award, which is given to two organizations. This year 38 organizations applied for the honor. The Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association also received the award. RAAC is the youngest organization to claim the prize.

The Metropolitan Regional Arts Council Board of Directors chose the winners based on how arts groups exemplify MRAC's vision. The criteria included causing artists and arts activities to thrive; integrating the arts into the social fabric and identity of the community; and enhancing understanding of the public value of the arts.

RAAC's mission is to build and strengthen the Rosemount community through the arts. In 2013 RAAC will host 42 events. MRAC praised the arts council for their Front Porch initiative as an example of a way to integrate art into the social fabric of the community.

Schwartz thanked the community for supporting RAAC by attending the various events.

Besides bragging rights, the award comes with $5,000 that will be used to bring more arts to the community. Schwartz said some of the funds will help establish a community theater. Otherwise, Schwartz said the funds will go to the general support of the group's mission.
