Park and ride could come soon

The Minnesota Valley Transit Authority has hired an engineering firm to do the design work for the Rosemount park and ride. They hope having a plan ready could move the project forward.

"We are hoping to move up the project date," said Rosemount community development director Kim Lindquist.

While nothing is set in stone, if things go well construction on the project could start as early as 2011. Lindquist said having the plans ready will make the project eligible to move up the project list for construction. Currently, plans call for the construction of the park and ride to start in 2013.

The MVTA hired Bonestroo to design plans for the station, which will be located on Burma Avenue across 145th Street from Rosemount City Hall. The facility will have space for 100 vehicles, an indoor shelter and cutouts along the street to allow the bus to pull out of traffic for loading and unloading.

The cost of the project is estimated at $2.4 million. Lindquist said most of the funding will come from a federal grant. Additional funds will come from the Metropolitan Council. The city also received a grant from Dakota County Development Agency for upgrades to the project such as landscaping and lighting..

Currently the MVTA has service between Rosemount and downtown Minneapolis. Buses pick up passengers at the Rosemount Community Center parking lot.

Up until 2009 the city received no direct service despite paying into the MVTA for more than 20 years. In 2009 the city council threatened to pull its membership unless service to the city improved.

Lindquist said they won't know until later whether the project will move up, but she said the city will be prepared if it does.
