Judicial center cafeteria may return soon

For years there has been no food service operation at the Dakota County Government Center campus in Hastings. But that could soon change, thanks to a recently approved joint powers agreements between Dakota County and Intermediate School District 917.

The Dakota County Board of Commissioners approved that agreement at its regular meeting this week. It could mean the cafeteria on the lower level of the Judicial Center will start to serve meals soon.

Intermediate School District 917 provides personal and career skills development and technical education programs to its member schools at its Rosemount location.

District 917 will partner with a local restaurant operator to operate the cafeteria and provide opportunities for student to work side by side with staff in all facets of the food service business. A full-time teacher will oversee the student-training program and manage the entire operation of the cafeteria in conjunction with the restaurant operator.

Both the school district and facilities management have met with the public health department to review the existing cafeteria space. The space is in appropriate condition for the use. The school district also has appropriate funding for the purchase of necessary cooking and serving equipment for operation of the cafeteria.

The school district will be responsible for the cost of the operation, maintenance and custodial duties for the cafeteria.

The agreement is effective until June 30, 2011, with annual one-year renewals after that date.

A restaurant did operate in the cafeteria after the county moved into the government center. The county leased the space to private individual who operated the restaurant. About 10 years ago, the space became vacant, when the private party decided not to operate the cafeteria any longer.
