Dakota County share of taxes will decline

Property tax payers in Dakota County may actually see their county share of taxes decrease next year.

At its regular meeting Sept. 11, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners approved a $129,152,073 preliminary 2013 levy. That is a .20 percent decrease from the 2012 approved levy of $129,402,073. Commissioners voted unanimously for the decrease.

Due to the levy reduction and other changes in the tax base, the owner of a median-value home will see, on average, a 5 percent decrease in the County portion of their property tax bill next year.

For example, the owner of a median value house -- $187,300, down from $200,500 -- will pay $551.19 for the county share of his or her taxes, a decrease of $29.52.

According to Dakota County finance director Matt Smith, the local tax base is 4.6 percent lower than for taxes payable in 2012.

Commissioners recommended the decrease at budget meetings in late August.

Dakota County is required to set the proposed preliminary property tax levy by Sept. 15 each year. The board is scheduled to adopt the final budget and tax levy by Dec. 1. The final county tax levy will now be limited to the 0.20 percent levy decrease, or lower, passed last week.

The commissioners have a reputation for keeping property taxes low; in recent years, Dakota County has maintained among the lowest county property tax rates in the state.

Dakota County administrator Brandt Richardson will present a recommended budget to the county board Nov. 6. County budget workshops are scheduled Nov. 6 to Nov. 9 with the Truth in Taxation hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 27 at the Dakota County Board Room, Administration Center, 1590 Highway 55, Hastings.

The adoption of the final 2012 budget and property tax levy is scheduled for Dec. 11.
