Council appoints Matt Kearney to serve remainder of term

Matt Kearney will be officially appointed to the Rosemount City Council Feb. 1. That evening the city will host an open house at 6:30 p.m. to introduce its newest council member to the public.

The Rosemount City Council conducted a second round of interviews Wednesday night and ultimately chose Matt Kearney to serve the two years remaining new State Representative Kurt Bills' term.

Pamela VanderWiel and Robert Leuth were the other applicants interviewed.

The council will formally approve the appointment at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 during the regular council meeting. After the vote, Kearney will be sworn in.

While all three candidates were impressive the council seemed to like Kearney because of his business background. When asked about his strengths Kearney said he is a numbers man and the next two years will require someone who is fiscally disciplined.

Kearney owns MJK Investments, a real estate investment company. He has an accounting degree from Iowa State University. Kearney has served on a number of community boards including the SKB Trust Fund, the city of Rosemount Facilities Task Force, and the Rosemount Area Hockey Association Board, as president, among others.

To make its decision each council member wrote their top two picks on a piece of paper. All four council members listed Kearney, while VanderWiel and Leuth received two votes apiece.

To validate the process council member Jeff Weisensel suggested each council member write down their number one pick. In that process Kearney received two votes while the others received one apiece.

The council then decided they were comfortable moving forward with Kearney.

During his interview with the council Kearney said it would be a great honor to serve on the council.

"I would have big shoes to fill," he said in regards to replacing Bills.

Before its Feb. 1 meeting the city council will host an open house at 6:30 p.m. to introduce Kearney to the public. The council also will take comments on its goals for the new year.
